Upon arriving in Arizona, Norma fell under the spell of the Southwestern desert, a landscape that profoundly shaped her artistic direction. Immersing herself in research, she began a striking series of Native American portraits, drawing from Photorealism and Josef Albers’ Optical Color Theory. 

The discovery of acrylic paint opened new possibilities, allowing her to merge the precision of Photorealism with the boldness of Pop Art in a way that felt natural and expressive. Through disciplined figure drawing and an exploration of positive and negative color, Norma captures not only the likeness of her subjects, but also her emotional and spiritual response to their presence.

Desert life

After many years in the Arizona desert, Norma developed a deep connection to its rugged landscapes and vibrant wildlife. This relationship inspired a compelling series of oil paintings that celebrate the living spirit of the desert. 

Her work brings to life the region’s wild inhabitants—majestic eagles, quail, desert tortoises, coyotes, and horses—alongside the quieter presence of birds, bees, dragonflies, and native flora. Through bold color and expressive form, Norma captures the harmony between the desert’s creatures and the land they call home.
